Alle synsindtryk har en placering og udstrækning i rum i forhold til personen, og forstyrrelser i den spatiale opfattelse virker ind på næsten alle dagligdags aktiviteter: At klæde sig på, håndtere genstande, læse, skrive og bevæge sig rundt. Visuospatiale forstyrrelser overses ofte, blandt andet fordi de tit ledsages af dårlig sygdomserkendelse, og fordi patienterne umiddelbart ser raske ud og taler godt, men de udgør en væsentlig hindring for funktionel bedring og kan være mere hæmmende for rehabilitering end mere synlige motoriske og sproglige problemer.<br /> <br /> Visuospatiale forstyrrelser omfatter adskillige tilstande med det fællestræk, at der er forkert vurdering og brug af visuospatial information. En éntydig klassifikation findes ikke, hvilket blandt andet hænger sammen med selve rumbegrebets flertydighed.
