Termen konstruktionsapraksi er lidt vildledende, da forstyrrelsen klinisk ikke hører til apraksierne, og i dag omtales forstyrrelsen ofte mere neutralt som ‘konstruktionelle vanskeligheder’. De konstruktionelle færdigheder er komplekse kognitive funktioner, som kræver intakt perception, spatial indordning samt normal motorisk udførelse, og integrationen af disse delfunktioner skal forløbe uforstyrret, men det er den spatiale forstyrrelse, som griber mest afgørende ind.<br /> <br /> Konstruktionelle forstyrrelser er hyppige ved hjerneskader, og hos patienter med læsion i højre hemisfære ses de ved ikke mindre end en trediedel. Kun sjældent vil patienten spontant rapportere om forstyrrelser af disse færdigheder, selv om de kan være væsentlige fx for hans muligheder for at vende tilbage til arbejdet. Undersøgelse af konstruktionelle færdigheder er derfor væsentlig efter hjerneskade især ved højresidige læsioner.
